Service Learning at Santo Yusup School - Sec 3A
On 22nd May, Sec 3A visited the Santo Yusup School, also known as Saint Joseph College. It is a privately owned Catholic school, which provides quality education to students from kindergarten to senior high level. Upon arrival, we were enthralled by the warm welcome extended to us by the school. Starting from the entrance of the school, their pupils greeted us by forming a line on both sides of the walkway, with boisterous music played by the members of their military band in the background. We were truly honoured by the grand reception from the school.
After a short introductory speech by the representatives of both schools, we were invited to participate in their morning exercise, which was likened to our ‘Great Singapore Workout’. Although the exercise consisted of very simple steps, all of us managed to work out a good sweat.
As our visit coincided with the school’s CCA day, our pupils had the opportunity to be involved in their various activities. For instance, some of the boys took part in a caterpillar competition.

The highlight of this school visit was the service learning component, where our pupils were tasked to teach English language. Over the past week, our pupils painstakingly prepared the teaching materials, eager to impart their knowledge to their counterparts. Albeit some setbacks like language barrier and challenging classroom scenarios, our pupils still pressed on, and taught to their best ability, embodying our school’s core value of ‘Resilience’. Kudos to the pupils of Sec 3A!

Service Learning at the Madrasah School - Sec 3C and 3D
On 20th May, Sec 3C visited the Madrasah School, a religious educational institution. As soon as we arrived, we were ushered into a solemn prayer room, where the staff and pupils were awaiting. After a short introductory speech by the Principal, five of our Indonesian pupils – Yunya, Gilbert, Prakoso, Rionaldo and Andrew – represented us to thank their school for this opportunity to interact with them.
The highlight of this school visit was the service learning component, where our pupils were tasked to teach English Language. The five groups, headed by our fluent native speakers, proceeded swiftly with their lessons. Despite the initial language barrier, they persevered, and tried different means to bring their ideas across. The pupils from the Madrasah were also very cooperative, as they attempted to answer all the questions posed to them, with much enthusiasm.

Apart from classroom teaching, our pupils also engaged their counterparts in a game of soccer for the boys and captain’s ball for the girls. From the squeals of laughter through the games, it was evident that the natives enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

On 21st May, Sec 3D also visited the Madrasah School, with the same agenda.

CIP on 22nd May by Sec 3B - School at Tidal Village
On 22nd May, Sec 3B with their teachers went to serve the pupils in a local school at the Tidal Village. Despite the lack of modern facilities at the school, the pupils there made the best out of their learning environment. They were very eager to learn and participated spontaneously. This positive learning attitude is indeed a learning experience for both our pupils and teachers.
When the pupils first arrived, they were welcomed by the local pupils and teachers in a very respectful manner. We were initially taken aback but soon learnt that it it is a sign of respect for persons older than them. Indeed, it was a great opportunity to learn about the Indonesian Culture.

Saturday is a CCA day for the Indonesian pupils. Our pupils were spontaneous in joining our Indonesian friends for their morning exercise.

After the morning exercise, our pupils taught our Indonesian friends the proper way of brushing their teeth. It was a learning experience for many of us as we tried to give instructions in their local language. You have indeed made use of what you have learnt in your CCM course :P Many of the pupils there were thankful for your gifts of toothbrush and toothpaste as the teachers shared with us that many of pupils could not afford to have their own toothbrush and have to share a toothbrush with their siblings at home. Also wish to commend you on the teeth model which you have made! It was such a sweet surprise and we could see the passion in your work. :)

Besides sharing on tooth hygience, the pupils also taught the children how to play a local game. If I am not wrong, it is a game of dog and bone.

The other pupils engaged the children in lessons such as drawing, English lessons as well as singing of songs.

We also got to tour around the school and looked at their classrooms. Although there was no class noticeboard in their classrooms, we saw that simple recycled materials could be used to make decorative items for their classrooms. It was indeed a cultural exchange.

At the end of the half day with the children, some of us have grown so attached to them that it was a little hard saying goodbye.. See all of you again next year!

CIP on 21st May by Sec 3F - CIP at Orphanage
On 21st May, Sec 3F together with their teachers went to spend some time with the orphans at one of the orphanages in Karimun.
On the bus journey there, we were heartened to hear the the girls telling their male classmates to treat the orphans with more care and graciousness because of their situations. :) Sec 3F, you have really proven yourself to have a heart for others. We teachers could see it from the effort you put in during the weeding of the Sepak Takraw court and how you opened your hearts during the interactions with the orphans in your game of soccer and drawing.
You have also shown so much sportmanship and friendship towards the orphans even though we have lost to our Indonesian friends in our game of soccer. I am sure you have learnt so much from our Indonesian friends. Well done pupils of Sec 3F! Your graciousness was indeed a moving sight for the teachers.
Finally thank to you to all the teachers especially Mr Kong who have moulded the pupils into such fine and mature young adults. :)

CIP 20th May by Sec 3E - Eyecare at Tidal Village
After the tree planting in the morning, Sec 3E together with their teachers went to the Tidal Village Health Centre for their Service Learning Experience.
Half of the pupils helped to check on the vision of the villagers using vision charts. Prior to this, the pupils attended a half day training on this. The pupils have definitely done well despite the short training received! Instructions printed in English and Melayu were prepared so that they could communicate with the villagers. Language barrier became a small problem when the heart was willing to serve. Living up to our school motto.. Dare to Serve ! Dare to Serve ! Initially we only expected to serve 50 children.. however, the response was so good that even the elderly villagers came forward and wanted their vision to be checked. The pupils of course obliged. So many free spectacles were distributed to the villagers and they were so grateful to be given the gift of vision! Well done pupils for your efforts!

After the children have completed their eye-sight screening, they were directed to the open space outside the centre where the other half of Sec 3E pupils engaged them with story-telling as well as a game of badminton and soccer. The children may be young but they learn so fast! They even taught our pupils how to play soccer with their excellent football skills. It was indeed an eye - opener.

CIP on 20th May - Tree Planting
On 20th May, our pupils from Sec 3C, 3E and 3G and teachers together with top officials of Karimun woke up early in the morning at 7 am (Karimun Time) and gathered in full strength to assist the island in its tree-planting effort.
Before the tree planting, we stopped by a playground where the pupils and teachers had a great time returning to "childhood" and having fun with the swings and see - saw.
Look at how happy and carefree we all were.. putting aside our inhibitations and just having fun :)

When the top officials arrived, we got down to serious work and got our hands dirty with the hope of creating a greener environment in Karimun. Some pupils even asked for more trees to plant after they were done with theirs. For most of the pupils, it was a refreshing experience as it was their first time digging using a hoe.
